About ZIBAWU – A Union of Excellence Since 1961
Fighting for workers’ rights, dignity, and prosperity in Zimbabwe’s financial sector for over 63 years.
Where We Came From
The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) was established in 1961, making it one of the oldest and most respected trade unions in Zimbabwe. For over six decades, we have stood as the voice of non-managerial employees in the financial services sector, representing workers in banks, microfinance institutions, building societies, and related industries.
From our humble beginnings, ZIBAWU has grown into a powerful force for change, with nearly 4,000 members across all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. We are registered with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and proudly affiliated with both the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and UNI Global Union.

Our Core Functions
ZIBAWU exists to protect and advance the interests of workers in Zimbabwe’s financial sector. Our work includes:

Legal Representation & Dispute Resolution
We represent members in disciplinary hearings, grievance procedures, and labour disputes from the workplace level all the way to the Constitutional Court.

Collective Bargaining
We negotiate with employers on behalf of our members to secure fair wages, improved working conditions, and better benefits.

Member Welfare & Support
Through our funeral assistance program, microfinance partnerships, land trust, and solar energy initiative, we provide tangible support to improve members’ quality of life.

Training & Capacity Building
We offer trade union education, leadership development, and “Know Your Rights” training to empower our members.

Advocacy & Campaigns
We campaign for progressive labour policies, occupational health and safety, gender equity, and the elimination of workplace harassment and discrimination.

Solidarity & Partnerships
We work closely with ZCTU, UNI Global Union, and other labour organizations to strengthen the workers’ movement locally and internationally.
